Workshop Description:

Dementia involves progressive cognitive impairment, loss of autonomy, and ultimately death.  Individuals facing dementia and their loved ones benefit from early and ongoing discussions of healthcare and caregiving options, and end of life preferences.

Part 1: Facilitating Healthcare and End of Life Discussions with Patients and Families (Dr. Thorn) offers specific suggestions to facilitate these critical conversations.

Part 2: Precision Brain Health: Preventing and Stabilizing Cognitive Impairment (Dr. Lokken) offers strategies to support cognitive and emotional health of patients, care partners, and practitioners to delay and prevent decline and poor quality of life.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the key discussion points to cover when helping clients and their loved ones adjust and plan after a life-limiting diagnosis
  • Specify dementia-specific considerations for post-diagnostic communications (e.g. decision capacity, dementia addendum
  • Discuss evidence based health behaviors for the prevention and stabilization of cognitive impairment
